Unexpected Blessings

by Teresa Smith on November 7, 2011

It’s been a little bit of a rough week. The little cat that I rescued and named Bella had some breathing issues and I had to rush her to an Animal ER Monday evening. Even though I’m concerned, she’s a fighter. I’ve been treating her, doing energy work on her, I’ve done several TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique) sessions on her, I’m giving her Bach Flower Rescue Remedy, nutritional supplementation, and probiotics.

I look at her face and wonder what has happened in her life… how did she get so malnourished, where did she come from, was she mistreated. I hate to think of animals being mistreated. I don’t understand how people can be cruel to animals. Through all of this, I’m glad she’s in my life. She’s definitely an unexpected blessing.

It was a welcome event when I got a call from my cousin yesterday and asked if I wanted to join them this evening to celebrate her upcoming birthday. It was nice to take a breather and just have some fun. We went to a local restaurant. My aunt had purchased a wonderful strawberry cake and had it placed on our table. Not knowing this, I bought a little chocolate cupcake for our small celebration. There were lots of funny cards and a few serious ones. We had such a great time. I love spending time with my aunt and cousins.

I’ve talked about my aunt before, she is awesome. She’s one of the sweetest women I know and the best of cooks. My cousin Sheila, takes after her mom. She’s caring, has a marvelous personality, has the best smile you’ve ever seen, and brightens up a room wherever she goes. Then there’s my cousin Greg. He’ll be reading this later and I’m sure he’s wondering what I’m going to say about him. Greg is just cool. I wasn’t as close to him growing up as I was my cousin Sheila. He’s an electronics wizard… always has been. I used go over and watch movies every Sunday night with him and a few other friends. He created a man cave years before anyone knew what a man cave was. Greg is kind and caring too, he just masks it with his sarcasm.

I love getting together with my cousins. Maybe it’s because we are all getting older, but I just really value time spent with family and friends. Tonight was an unexpected surprise when the waitress came at the end of our meal to see how the checks would be divided. Greg was sitting next to me and just raised one finger to the waitress. We all stated no, but he picked up the tab in full.  It was an unexpected blessing.

An unexpected blessing can be anything. Paying for meal, buying a cup of coffee, a kind word, a smile. How often do we recognize these blessings. How often do we take the time to bless others. What kind of world would it be if we each decided to bless just one person on a daily basis.

So today, I not only celebrate the upcoming birthday of my cousin Sheila, but I also celebrate my cousin Greg. Thanks for the unexpected blessing and for reminding me to look for ways I can bless others also.
