Looking for a quick, easy, and inexpensive natural air freshener? I saw the idea on Pinterest and decided to create my own version. I love trying out new things… especially ones that are inexpensive, easy, and work.
Find a container. It can be glass or plastic, fancy or plain. I chose plastic. While at the store, I found a 3 inch diameter plastic container with a lid that screws off. The lid had a flap that could be opened at different positions depending on how much scent you wished. The Pinterest version used a small canning jar and aluminum foil for the lid. I wanted something more sturdier.
Items to have on hand:
Baking Soda
Essential Oils
Container with Lid
Organza or similar fabric
Scissors
Take a clean Container, fill the container with Baking Soda, place several drops of your favorite Essential Oil over the baking soda. I placed a small square of Organza fabric over the container and then placed the lid on. Then I used the Scissors to create a scalloped type edge around the container. Other versions either poked holes in the lid / aluminum foil or used a container that already had holes in the top like a cheese shaker. I decided to use the organza so that if the container accidentally got knocked over, the contents wouldn’t spill out. The organza still allows the baking soda to absorb odors and the essential oils to spread fragrance into the air. I used Young Living Lavender Essential Oil. You can use your favorite oil. In the future I’m going to also try Valor, Purification, Believe, or Joy.
The containers can be placed in a closet, kitchen, bathroom, or any room that needs a little freshening or removing of odors.
Periodically, close the lid and gently shake the container to boost it’s air freshening power. Later, don’t throw out the used baking soda. Sprinkle it on the carpet and then vacuum or pour it down your sink.
Try it yourself, add your own twist, be creative, have fun. Feel free to share your ideas here or on Facebook.
